What is a dynamic QR code?

Last updated 12 June 2026

A dynamic QR code points to a short link you control (for example https://free-qr.co.uk/r/example123456). When someone scans it, we redirect them to your current destination. On Pro, you can change that destination anytime from your dashboard — without reprinting posters, menus, or business cards.

How dynamic QR codes work

When you create a dynamic QR on Free-QR.co.uk, the printed pattern encodes a redirect URL on our domain. You manage the final destination (website, PDF, menu page, vCard landing page, and so on) in your account. Scanners never see a long, ugly URL — they just scan and land where you want them.

This is different from a static QR code, which bakes the final URL directly into the image. Change your website structure or swap a PDF, and a static code breaks. Dynamic codes stay valid because the short link stays the same.

When to use dynamic vs static

  • Use dynamic for restaurant menus, marketing campaigns, property listings, event schedules, and anything that changes seasonally.
  • Static can work for one-off WiFi network details or a vCard that rarely changes — though Pro still helps if you rebrand or update contact details.
  • Free plan note: Free-QR.co.uk includes 1 live QR free forever; the destination is fixed once saved. Pro and Pro+ unlock editable destinations and deeper analytics.

UK business examples

Restaurants and cafés

Print one menu QR per table. Update allergens, prices, or seasonal dishes by changing the link in your dashboard — not by reprinting laminated sheets. See our restaurant menu use case and menu QR guide.

Estate agents and lettings

Boards and brochures often need a new listing URL every few weeks. A dynamic code on a “For Sale” board can point to the latest property, video tour, or booking form. Read more in our estate agents guide.

Events and promotions

Posters for a summer festival can point to early-bird tickets in June and a photo gallery in August — same QR on the print run.

Analytics and trust

Dynamic codes let you measure scans over time: useful for judging poster placement, menu engagement, or campaign reach. Free-QR.co.uk shows UK-friendly analytics in your dashboard (7 days on Free; longer history on paid plans).

We also run abuse reporting and URL safety checks so redirect links are not used for phishing. That protects your brand and your customers.
