How to create a WiFi QR code

A WiFi QR code lets guests join your network by scanning with their phone camera — no typing the network name or a long WPA password. Ideal for UK cafés, salons, holiday lets, and waiting areas where mobile keyboards are awkward.

How WiFi QR codes work

When scanned, the phone reads a standard WiFi payload (network name, security type, and password) and offers to connect. On Free-QR.co.uk, choose the WiFi type in the builder, enter your SSID and password, and we generate the correct encoding automatically.

Unlike URL QR codes, WiFi codes are typically static — the password is embedded in the pattern. If you change your router password, you need a new QR (or a dynamic URL landing page that shows the current password on Pro).

Step-by-step setup

1. Log into your router admin (often on a sticker on the hub) and note the SSID (network name) and password.
2. Open the QR builder, select WiFi, and enter WPA/WPA2 details.
3. Customise colours to match your brand — still use enough contrast for scanning.
4. Download PNG or SVG and print for counter, window, or room folder.
5. Test with iPhone and Android before laminating.

Security and GDPR

Guest WiFi QR codes expose the password to anyone who can see the print. For public venues that is usually acceptable for a guest VLAN with limited access. Avoid putting your main business network password on a wall poster.
