What barcodes do well
Traditional barcodes (EAN-13, UPC) identify a product. The till looks up price and stock from that number. They are optimised for high-speed retail lanes — not for sending a customer to your website.
If you manufacture packaged goods for UK retailers, you still need proper barcode allocation (GS1). QR codes do not replace that system on shelf packaging.
What QR codes do well
QR codes bridge physical → digital. A poster, menu, property board, or business card can open a URL, join WiFi, save a contact, or show a payment page. Any modern smartphone camera can read them without a special app.
