How big should a QR code be on a poster?

QR codes that are too small or too far away fail to scan — frustrating customers and wasting print spend. Size the code for the distance between the viewer and the poster, not just the paper dimensions.

Rule of thumb: scanning distance

A common guideline is a QR code width of roughly 1/10 of the scan distance for reliable reads. Examples:

  • Scan from 20 cm (menu on table) → ~2 cm QR minimum
  • Scan from 50 cm (counter display) → ~5 cm
  • Scan from 1 m (shop window) → ~10 cm
  • Scan from 3 m (poster above eye level) → ~30 cm or larger

When in doubt, go larger. Extra quiet zone (white margin) around the code improves detection.

Poster and billboard scenarios

Bus stop or street poster (A2/A1)

Assume many viewers are 1–3 metres away. Place the QR in the lower third where line-of-sight is clearest — not at the top edge where phones struggle. Aim for at least 8–12 cm module width on A2; larger for A1 or wide-format.

Estate agent board

Pedestrians scan from pavement distance. Boards often need 10–15 cm codes with strong black/white contrast and matte laminate to reduce sun glare.

Event venue entrance

Queues scan from arm's length initially — 4–6 cm may work on a door poster. For banners above head height, increase size proportionally.

Resolution and format

Contrast and environment

  • Avoid glossy lamination directly over the code if glare is an issue
  • Do not place on busy photographic backgrounds without a white backing plate
  • Test at night if the poster is lit externally — shadows matter
